18 Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
19 So Jesus said to him, Why do you call Me good? No one isgood but One, that is, God. 20 You know the commandments:Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and your mother.
21 And he said, All these things I have kept from my youth.
22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.
23 But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.
24 And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.
26 And those who heard it said, Who then can be saved?
27 But He said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.
Reflections:
Its not too often that we see Jesus emotions displayed, but here were told that Jesus was sorrowful. This was because the rich young ruler was also sorrowful over having to choose between Jesus and money. He had to decide whether to follow Jesus or not. He chose not. This young man truly wanted eternal life, but just couldnt part with his lifestyle. His pleasure now was worth more to him than eternity then. At this, Jesus was full of sorrow.
Others also had to make the same decision and they chose Jesus. There was Matthew who made a very lucrative (dishonest) living tax collecting for the Romans; and then there was short-statured Zaccheus who was also a rich man (LK 19:2). But for some reason this rich young ruler just couldnt do it.
In response to this Jesus makes an incredible statement: For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. This hyperbole (great exaggeration to make a point) left the disciples bewildered as they responded, Who then can be saved?
Perhaps there are folks we love, like the rich young ruler, who seem to be enjoying that pot of gold at the rainbows end, and nothing else seems to matter to them. They know of Christ, but just cant bear the thought of possibly being displaced from their wealth. We pray and pray and still they press on for riches with no seeming desire for Christ.
Jesus response to the disciples question, Who then can be saved? brings with it great hope: The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.Dont give up beloved, God is well able to save them, dont give up
