1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NKJV)
24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. 25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. 26 Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
Reflections:
For many, Christianity has become a spectator sport. We watch and we cheer, as we watch safely from the sidelines. Biblically we are all to run the race. The Apostle Paul certainly agrees with that, as our scripture verse today clearly illustrates.
When athletes train for a race the food they eat is of extreme importance in order to build proper strength and stamina. Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts (Jer 15:16). But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Heb 5:14).
The correct exercises are essential to properly prepare us for the race. They are:
The exercising of our minds in order to know the written word of God (the Bible) (2 Tim 2:15).
The exercising of a vital and passionate prayer life (1 Thess 5:17-19).
The exercise of fully grasping the truth that all things truly do work together for good and that God is always in control (Rom 8:28).
The exercising of an ongoing intimacy with God through praise and spiritual worship (John 4:24).
The exercise of learning to be led about by the Holy Spirit (Rom8:14).
When we are finally in condition we must seriously choose to be a contender and to enter the race. When we do we mustnt look to our left, or to our right as to how to run the race. We must allow the Holy Spirit to define our calling and style and then run! run to win!!!
