Genesis 4:7 (Amplified Bible)
7If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.
1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJV)
8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Reflections:
Our first verse today comes from the account of Cain and his brother Abel. They both brought an offering to the Lord; Cain being a farmer brought produce and Abel, who was a shepherd, brought a lamb. Cain knew what was required, but decided otherwise. He was even given the chance to change his offering. Whether it was pride or jealousy, or both, he refused.
Little did he know that the devil was stalking him and unless he recanted of his poor choice he would become a pawn in Satans hand. Well, he made the wrong choice and it cost him everything. Cain murdered his brother Abel and lied to God about it. As a result Cain was banished from the presence of God, his family and his friends; a marked man who would wander through the earth aimlessly until death would one day claim his lost soul.
As Christians we need to be cautiously aware that Satan is patiently stalking us, hoping to cause us to stumble and fall. And if you do not do well, sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.
We must remain steadfast in the faith and make godly choices. The Holy Spirit is always present to warn us when we begin to stray, and to give us the strength to always overcome -- that is if thats our true desire. We know what God requires as an offering from us. Its our very heart of hearts. Our desire, passion and love for Him.
If we, like Abel, bring this sacrifice of the heart we will remain steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord (1 Cor 15:58a).
