We dont often equate sickness and sin. I guess we dont want to believe that their connected, but Jesus here says they are (at least sometimes).
To offset this account we read the account of the man born blind from his birth, And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him (John 9:1-3).
However, I dont think we can ignore the sin/sickness connection, for by doing so we might well forfeit our own healing. One things for sure, there was faith present; so much so that the folks carrying the young man with palsy tore the roof apart to get him to Jesus.
(Palsy is a medical condition that causes the body, or part of the body to shake uncontrollably. Common diseases resembling this today would seem to be Parkinsons disease or Multiple Sclerosis)
Jesus spoke healing to this young man saying, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. And then Jesus said, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
Well, suffice it to say that the religious folks present didnt like Jesus theology as it made Jesus equal to God. You can read the full account in Mark 2:2-12.
But what about us, are we willing to equate the possibility that we who are sick might be so because of past sins committed? How foolish we would be to ignore such a very real possibility
