18 This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, 19 keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith. 20 Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they will be taught not to blaspheme.
Reflections:
The above exhortation from the apostle Paul to Timothy was to keep fighting the good fight of faith. Not to let up, and not to become distracted away from the faith.
When someone is on the ocean in a large ship, especially near the shoreline, they just cant just sit back and stop paying attention to what is going around them. It only takes one large rock, or reef, to literally rip a gash in the side of their hull and before they know it theyre ship-wrecked, or worse.
Were designed to sail out in the spiritual deep, set apart. The Holy Spirit will tell us when and where our next port of call is so that we can effectively minister Christ to the lost.
For the Christian the rocks and reefs of sin and compromise are always lurking just below lifes surface when we sail too near the shore. If we stop paying attention we could be spiritually shipwrecked in short order. Remember our adversary is always prowling about seeking to devour us.
It really doesnt matter how long weve been saved or how spiritually mature we might think we are. If we take our eyes off of faith, and our relationship with Christ, we are then on our own and believe me, in this state, we are no match for our relentless adversary Stay in the deep waters in Christ
