James 1:19 (KJV)
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
Reflections:
I guess I never really realized how very powerful it is to simply listen; to be still, and to keep my words to an absolute minimum to just simply listen. Ive always been a pretty good listener, but I somehow overlooked the depth of its healing power.
My wife Terry and I, just the other night, had the privilege of sitting with a very dear and special sister in Christ while she poured out the awful pain of her past. She was suffering so badly in those grief-filled moments that her words emerged through seeming endless heart-wrenching, pain-filled sobs.
This torment went on for the better part of an hour and at the end of it finally - a peace settled over her and she was able to sleep and to awaken refreshed with a smile on her face.
Her battle with her past is not over yet, but, thank God, there are oases of healing along her emotionally arduous desert journey. One of these oases can often be reached through someone taking the time to simply listen.
A precious sister-in-the-Lord once shared with me that Feelings buried alive never die. Oh, how true this is beloved. Buried feelings become a wellspring of torment that hounds its victim for the rest of their lives.
Jesus, if pursued, will always through the power of the Holy Spirit intervene and lead its victim out of their painful past and into that wonderful freedom theyve so longed for. Who the Son sets free is free indeed! Sometimes He uses us to help, along the way -- by simply listening
