Matthew 12:47-50 (NKJV)

47 Then one said to Him, Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You. 48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, Who is My mother and who are My brothers? 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.

Reflections:

Jesus is talking about family here; a physical versus a spiritual one. If we can bring ourselves to embrace this teaching of Jesus, we would find it to be a glorious expression of the true Body of Christ in the earth. We are united by Jesus blood into one body; one family!

Lets take a look at these startling words of Jesus as he took this thought one step further: If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple (Lk 14:26).

Now hates a very strong word. However, the following translation of this same verse brings us to a clearer understanding:

If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his [own] father and mother [in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God] and [likewise] his wife and children and brothers and sisters--[yes] and even his own life also--he cannot be My disciple (Amplified Bible).

Well, I think Jesus has made it pretty clear. If were professing to be Jesus disciple, then each of us make up a portion of His spiritual family. And if family, we are called to love one another. Actually Jesus commanded it to be so in John 15:12: This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Doesnt sound like an option, does it?

If some of us are still having problems loving unconditionally like Jesus, we need to earnestly and desperately ask the Holy Spirit to change our hearts. Just think about it for a moment -- bitterness, hatred and ill-will are not the product of a pure and spiritually healthy heart.

Isnt it time to get well and to allow the Holy Spirit to show us what love and family really is (be it in the natural, or in the spiritual), and to teach us to do so just like the Master?
