12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
12And from the days of John the Baptist until the present time, the kingdom of heaven has endured violent assault, and violent men seize it by force [as a precious prize--a share in the heavenly kingdom is sought with most ardent zeal and intense exertion].
Reflections:
I have included two different translations above to try to make this difficult, and controversial, verse a bit clearer. The first reference in the NKJV leaves us questioning what kind of violence, and from who, is the kingdom of heaven suffering violence. The second reference in the Amplified Bible allows us to focus in on this violence and understand it more clearly.
The word violence here means a force as in being energetic. What at first appears to be a negative verse is wonderfully transformed as an incredibly positive verse revealing the dynamics of the true Christian heart. Lets also look at the word ardent in the second referenced verse. It means: Intensely enthusiastic or devoted; zealous (an ardent disciple).
Should we desire to be any less in light of all that Christ has done for us? Ive often asked myself how I could possibly say thank you to God for such an awesome salvation. This verse has helped to answer my question.
Jesus put it this way when He quoted one of the Ten Commandments to a lawyer that was challenging Him: You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. (Lk 10:27).
This insatiable, unquenchable desire for the kingdom of heaven is the fire of the Holy Spirit which burns within every true believers heart
