Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Reflections:
Our verse today says that Jesus endured the cross. To endure means to remain firm under suffering or misfortune without yielding. Jesus surely endured the cross for us, and the shame, oh the shame how could he have ignored the shame?
After all He was insulted, spit upon, mocked beaten severely until close to death. He died a criminals death and its a toss-up with interpreters whether or not Jesus hung there fully naked (without any loin cloth).
All we need do is to picture ourselves, innocent of any crime, hanging naked in front of all eyes. For the sinless Son of God this had to have been extreme humiliation and emotional suffering.
But he endured it all for the joy set before him. This was an incredible act of love, not only for the Father to send Jesus knowing what his son must endure at the hands of sinful men, but for Jesus to actually abase and humiliate himself for us.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life
