19 So Jesus answered them by saying, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, the Son is able to do nothing of Himself (of His own accord); but He is able to do only what He sees the Father doing, for whatever the Father does is what the Son does in the same way [in His turn].
20 The Father dearly loves the Son and discloses to (shows) Him everything that He Himself does. And He will disclose to Him (let Him see) greater things yet than these, so that you may marvel and be full of wonder and astonishment.
Reflections:
Todays verses reveal to us a truth that is very amazing and at the same time very exciting. It has to do with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit brought this truth to life in me, it caused me to spiritually pivot on the inside changing how I perceived Jesus and the whole plan of God. It closed the gap and made Christ more personal to me.
When I was first saved, and began to study the bible I saw an invincible God that had come to earth to die for our sins. He was Emmanuel (God with us). I thought how could he have possibly fail? He is God. But as I studied on and read further I found that he was also called the last Adam.
You see, the first Adam failed to maintain an eternal relationship with God. Fellowship with God was broken because of the choice Adam made to sin. Because of this all men were born with the same passed-down sin nature of Adam; doomed to eternal separation from God. The reason Christ came to the earth he created was to cancel this separation-curse and to re-unite us with the Father forever. These following verses reveal this truth:
For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive (1 Cor 15:22).
Thus it is written, The first man Adam became a living being (an individual personality); the last Adam (Christ) became a life-giving Spirit [restoring the dead to life] (1 Cor15:45).
But in order for Christ, the son of man, to win back salvation fair and square He would have to play by the same rules that Adam did when he lost his innocence. Christ had to leave his glory and power behind (in heaven) in order to win back salvation through only choice. He was God with us in the form and nature that Adam had, but without the power of God. The power He displayed was a result of the Holy Spirit living inside him; the same Holy Spirit he received at his water-baptism in the Jordon River.
Isnt it interesting that up until the time that Jesus received the Holy Spirit he had never done a miracle. This is because he was a man whos glory was left in heaven.
He was lead about and told what to do every step of the way by the indwelling Holy Spirit (God). Jesus could have no power in and of himself. Only in this way could he truly win back salvation. Re-read our verses today and this will become obvious. Jesus was a man (sent from heaven; the God-man on a divine mission)!
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit with no sin nature so that he would be just like Adam before the fall; with the same Holy Spirit living within him; leading, guiding and empowering him. It was Jesus CHOICES that won us back, not his power (Lk 22:42-44; Heb 4:15).
Whats the point? Once weve made the right choices To surrender our lives to Christ as Lord and Savior of our lives, WE HAVE THE VERY SAME POWER OF GOD that Jesus had, the Holy Spirit, living in us (Gal 2:20; John 14:12; Rom 8:11)). Through Jesus Christs death on the cross, and his glorious resurrection, our sins have been cancelled (nailed to His cross). We have been empowered and called upon to change our generation as ambassadors for this wonderful, personal Christ!
