20 But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.
Reflections:
Usually those who expound on Matthew 13:18-23 zero in on the seed that fell among the thorns, and the cares of the world that causes them to be unfruitful. But how many people have you known that fit the situation in our verses today?
These are the folks that fail to develop a root system. They depend on others to keep them alive spiritually. They fail to take the time to allow the Holy Spirit to deal with the rocks in their life. They come running to Jesus for relief from a crisis in their life, but when the sun comes up they become scorched, and because they have no real personal root system they wither away.
I have known many folks like this who are seemingly on fire for Jesus, but when lifes heat is really turned up, they revert back to their original state. Some endure for days, and some for years, but then all of a sudden, like a comet, theyre burned out and gone.
What seemingly happens is that when the pressures of life come to bear they just cant seem to maintain and the life they left behind quickly catches up with them. This is heartbreaking, but it need not happen.
The solution: We must STOP and deal with the rocks of our past until each and every one is removed by Christ himself. To do this we must take on the personal responsibility and desire to learn of, and to grow in Christ under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit. This is hard work, but only then can we reach the rich soil in which to securely grow and flourish
