Luke 18:9-14 (TLB)

Then he told this story to some who boasted of their virtue and scorned everyone else:

10 ï¿½Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a proud, self-righteous Pharisee, and the other a cheating tax collector. 11 The proud Pharisee prayed this prayer: Thank God, I am not a sinner like everyone else, especially like that tax collector over there! For I never cheat, I dont commit adultery, 12 I go without food twice a week, and I give to God a tenth of everything I earn.

13 ï¿½But the corrupt tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed, but beat upon his chest in sorrow, exclaiming, God, be merciful to me, a sinner. 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home forgiven! For the proud shall be humbled, but the humble shall be honored.

Reflections:

Its funny, when we read this parable we all seem to relate to the tax collector, because hes the good guy in the story. We dont want to believe that we could be, in any way, the self-righteous, look-down-my-nose-at, proud, judgmental Pharisee (Ive added a few more attributes here).

But maybe we should at least check and see if the shoe fits. Here are some definitions to consider.

Self-righteous: having or showing an exaggerated awareness of one's own virtuousness or rights.

Proud: Feeling pleasurable satisfaction over an act, possession, quality, or relationship by which one measures one's stature or self-worth

Judgmental: of or denoting an attitude in which judgments about other people's conduct are made.

I do hope the shoe didnt fit

Carla commented on yesterday's "Bible Portion for Today" regarding our salt losing its savor:

"Preach it Ron. For those that use Grace as a license to continue sinning and for those that have been taught that by those who've preached it can be hard thing to undo, especially if it's been engrained in them. It is not for us to judge for ultimately we're all accountable when we have to stand and fall before Christ as to what we did or didn't do. Knowing that you have to answer to Christ and not man should be enough to walk the narrow path but unfortunately sometimes that's easier said than done.

If we're truly walking and be led by the spirit we're not going to want to "porn peek here and there, use a little here and there", however if we do and truly, truly repent, God does give grace and forgiveness, however we still reap what we sow for indulging. There's always a price to pay for the good, the bad and the ugly choices that we make. The choice is ours!"
