14Strive to live in peace with everybody and pursue that consecration and holiness without which no one will [ever] see the Lord.
19 For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.
Reflections:
The last part of our first verse (Heb 12:14) seems so outrageous. It sounds like salvation is one huge works project. If I live holy Ill get to go to heaven, and if I dont I wont. Whatever happened to grace as descrembed in Eph 2:8-9?
The answer is really quite simple and very profound. In the forth chapter of Romans were given a major clue: and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. This is the Spirit of holiness that was in Christ and now dwells in us (Rom 8:11).
The true born-of-the-Spirit Christian is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Holiness dwelling deep within our heart crying out Abba (father), Father (Gal 4:6)! We are automatically holy, because of Christ, and this holiness (from the Holy Spirit) emerges naturally from within us in a desperate desire to be all that God wants us to be.
We dont have to beat ourselves down in self-condemnation, because we cant do it on our own anyway. Without Christ we can do nothing! Holiness is not to be a response of trying to live up to the Law, or trying to overcome guilt or condemnation, for none of this applies to the true child of God (Rom 8:1). Performance Christianity is pure bondage!
When we feel as though the Holy Spirit wants us to address a holiness issue in us, all that is required is for us to pursue Him by:
Agreeing with Him about the specific holiness issue.
And to give Him permission to work that issue in and through us.
The rest is up to Him and He will bring it to pass!
This way we gain a supernatural victory (through Him) and a powerful testimony as to the wonder-working power of God working in us

Claire responded to yesterday's "Bible Portion for Today" regarding Jesus, "who went about doing good:"
"Wow! Love this. All too often we mistake emotional response or reaction for the empowering of the Holy Spirit. It has been my experience that emotion plays very little part in the Holy Spirit working through us (though we may experience emotion at the onset), except that we be loving, compassionate and responsive. The Word of God and conversations with our Lord (although not forsaking the gathering together of the brethren) are powerful enough tools to go about "doing good" without relying on others' examples of their walks. My walk is not the same as another brother or sister's so trying to replicate the actions of them results in human do-goodness only.
