16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Reflections:
This familiar Bible verse contains deep truths that can make all the difference in eternity. At first glance it appears that all one must do to be saved is to believe in Jesus and that He died for us on the cross. Unfortunately as a result of this surface-only understanding we have many religious denominations all claiming that they are Christian and well on their way to heaven.
However, the Devil also believes this verse (all too well I might add); however I think all of us will agree that his name will not be found written in the Lambs Book of Life.
If we are to come to the full truth of this verse we must discover the true meaning of the word believeth. A quick trip to a Biblical Greek Concordance will bring amazing clarity to this verse; or we can look at this same (John 3:16) verse in the Amplified Bible (which draws from the root Greek word meanings) as follows:
For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.
Wouldnt we do well to ask ourselves these three questions: Am I trusting in Christ only for my salvation? Is my life intimately one with His? Do I constantly rely on Christ as my sole source of provision and Life? I trust you were able to answer: Yes! Yes!! and yes!!!
