53 Then Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which came down from heavennot as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever. 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
Reflections:
This was a very troubling discourse, not only for Jesus close disciples, but for many of his other followers also. The clue to understanding such a seemingly outlandish presentation is found in verse 63. Once this is understood, everything prior to it quickly zooms into focus. All that Jesus taught was spiritual, and must be appropriated in the spirit.
Herein lies a great, well-hidden truth. One that has been cleverly disguised by the deceiver, and arch enemy of the church, Satan himself. The secret to emotional and physical wellbeing is spiritual!
We have, for the most part, been exposed to a well-packaged gospel and approach to Christianity that has been reduced to a system of step 1, step 2 and so on. We hear that, If we just keep coming to fellowship, read our Bibles and pray, everything will be all right. Truth be known, were not all right. We sit, listen, read our Bibles and pray and twenty years later were still in bondage to the same old destructive patterns.
How come it didnt get any better? Its because the answer is not to be found in the many, and varied, psychological techniques of behavior modification applied in Christianity today. The solution is a spiritual one! We cannot become really well using our five senses only. Wellness requires the use of a sixth component, and that component is spiritual; owned and operated by the Holy Spirit (of whom we hear typically little to nothing about). There are many, many spiritual principles in the Bible awaiting to be applied spiritually in conjunction with the Holy Spirit. These principles always bear fruit!
By way of summary, Jesus is speaking in the spirit in todays verse 63. We can eat all the natural flesh, and drink all the blood we can stand (ugh), but it wont help, because the flesh profits nothing, the words Jesus speaks to us, they are spirit and they are life
