Job 2:11-13 (NKJV)
11 Now when Jobs three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, each one came from his own placeEliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment together to come and mourn with him, and to comfort him. 12 And when they raised their eyes from afar, and did not recognize him, they lifted their voices and wept; and each one tore his robe and sprinkled dust on his head toward heaven. 13 So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.
Reflections:
Why couldnt Jobs three friends minister to him properly? To say they were not really his friends would be wrong. After all they wept, tore their clothes, sprinkled dust on their heads and sat for seven days with Job without saying a word. How many friends do we have that would do that for us in our grief?
It clearly wasnt that they werent Jobs dear friends; its that they just couldnt comprehend Jobs situation. After all, who could; without a supernatural Word of Knowledge? They were just unable to think outside their religious box.
In their religious culture when a man suffered such, like Job, he must have sinned a grievous sin. What else could it be? Well, we have the good fortune to see behind the scenes as God and Satan have it out over Job. God knew Jobs heart, but the devil in his obnoxious arrogance thought he could derail Job into cursing God.
Even Jobs wife fell to Satans evil whisper when she told Job to, curse God and die. This incredible account of Jobs suffering is in the Bible to teach us a deep spiritual lesson. And that is that things arent always what they appear or seem to be.
Theres nothing quite as immature as a Christian flipping out Bible verse after Bible verse, assuming they know instantly what the problem is. And just like Jobs friends they dont have a clue what theyre talking about. The result is that they make the situation far worse, not better.
