31Simon, Simon (Peter), listen! Satan has asked excessively that [all of] you be given up to him [out of the power and keeping of God], that he might sift [all of] you like grain, 32But I have prayed especially for you [Peter], that your [own] faith may not fail; and when you yourself have turned again, strengthen and establish your brethren.
Reflections:
Peter betrayed Jesus, denying he even knew him not once, but three times! How did Jesus respond? He said, Peter, when you have turned again (repented and have experienced my forgiveness), strengthen your brethren. Just imagine how wretched Peter must have felt after denying the Jesus he loved so very much. His pain must have been overwhelming as he wept bitter tears of repentance. Jesus simply loved, and forgave him.
And how about that pharisaical murderer, Saul, who was threatening to destroy all who followed Christ? After consenting to Stephens death he headed to Damascus to round up more of Jesus followers. Jesus had to literally knock him off his horse to get his attention; but when he got it, sure enough, Saul repented and God graciously forgave and saved him. God even changed his name to Paul, the apostle who was responsible for the establishing of Christianity all over Asia Minor and Rome.
Although Satan did a number on these men, including Moses the murderer and King David the murder/adulterer, once they truly repented, that wonderful, ever-ready, inexhaustibly-available, mercy and grace of God came flooding right on in. They freely received the lavish forgiveness of a loving heavenly father who ultimately was able to use them, again and again, for his glory.
When weve messed up our lives through poor choices like Moses, King David, Peter, Saul, or even the prodigal son (Lk 15: 11-32), just remember the that Father is waiting with open arms to receive us back again as the son, or daughter, he has so longed for. We couldnt wander so far, or sin so much that we cant be forgiven. Jesus sacrifice is limitless. God wants to exchange His beauty for the ashes of our lives. All we need do is sincerely repent and ask
