16And also concerning Maachah the mother of Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove: and Asa cut down her idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the brook Kidron.
Acts 19:18-20 (New King James Version)
18 And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. 19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, andit totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.
Reflections:
There comes a time when were called to clean house -- to purge our homes of those things which do not glorify God, i.e. books, pagan images and statues, occult paraphernalia, ungodly and worldly music, etc. Now of course this is where everyone starts yelling legalism. To me this is not legalism, its simply how we truly honor God in all things.
I remember as a young Christian purging my home of everything I felt did not honor God; that is except one thing. It was a large statue of A many-armed pagan goddess. It sat boldly, right there in our living room where everyone could see it. My mom loved the one she had so much that she bought us one too. To honor mom we decided to leave it there and not to throw it out.
Well, one day a zealous Christian friend came to my home and spotted it. He cried out with a horrified look on his face, what is that thing!? I explained and he recommend we quickly take it outside and stone it to pieces. With some reluctance I decided that, yes, this was the right thing to do. And so we had a grand ole time smashing that statue to dust and renouncing everything it stood for.
Next time mom came to visit the first thing she noticed was the absence of the statue. She asked about its whereabouts and I, like George Washington who had just cut down his fathers cherry tree, didnt tell a lie. Well!!! She was not just a little upset. I believe she even called me a religious fanatic at the time. It took her a long time to get over it. I was sorry I hurt her, but at the same time I was glad I had honored God.
The best thing about the whole thing was that the next time I ran across todays verses in the Bible. I could say, amen
