Romans 12:2-3 (KJV)
2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. 3For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
Reflections:
Its a ongoing battle in the spirit, and in our flesh, to try and keep the good ole boy dead, such that we can always be victories in Christ. When we do something spiritually productive, folks naturally want to compliment us for doing such a good job. If someone preaches well, does a kindness, or functions well in the Holy Spirit, people naturally want to say, great job, well done!
The problem arises when the person doing a great job, begins to think they are doing a great job! Pride can subtly slip in on us and then of course weve been set up for a fall. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall (1 Cor 10:12).
The tell-tale tip-off that were heading in a regrettable direction is when we begin to hear the Is the mes and the my ministry every other sentence or so. The devils slick (like slime) and we just have to watch out for him. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour (1 Pet 5:8).
Chances are that folks arent going to stop the compliments coming, especially if we handle ourselves maturely in our calling. The solution is to somehow deflect the compliments back to the one who truly deserves them for giving His gifts to be used by us; the Lord Jesus Christ via the Holy Spirit.
The other side of the I-me-my coin is when we over-sweeten it with an obvious false humility. This too equals the same spiritual pride incognito. It becomes clear that we must use the wisdom of the Holy Spirit in order to maintain a right balance such that we wont think of ourselves more highly than we ought
