2 Samuel 22:35-37 (New King James Version)
35 He teaches my hands to make war,
So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
36 You have also given me the shield of Your salvation;
Your gentleness has made me great.
37 You enlarged my path under me;
So my feet did not slip.
Reflections:
The above is a small portion of a song (psalm) that David wrote. Emotionally captured by Gods faithfulness, provision, protection, strength and mercy, this song reaches its pinnacle when David proclaims, Your gentleness has made me great.
What was this gentleness that made David so great that even God Himself testified of him that he (David) was a man after Gods own heart (Acts13:22)? Well, lets look at this word gentleness.
Gentleness (humility, meekness) in the Hebrew also carries with it a condescendence by God. This means that God voluntarily descended to a level regarded as lower than Himself in order to do something very special for David.
David in his awful despair looked to God and offered to Him a continual sacrifice of thanksgiving, praise and worship. Of course God, as He always does, out-gave David and imparted a portion of His very own gentleness to him. This imparted gentleness from God is what made David a great, great man and king of all Israel.
What David is really saying in this verse is that, This is not about me God -- what Ive become is all about You! Thank You for Your gift of gentleness. It has brought about a greatness I dont even deserve (but Ill take it -- and use it for Your glory).
The question this morning is will we also (like David) avail ourselves to this fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:22) and use it for Gods glory?
