I went to a memorial service recently for a karate Grand Master that was one of my instructors.
While they're certainly a place to grieve and express your condolences, calling hours and memorials are also a place where you see people you haven't seen in years or even decades.
And that can be pretty interesting!
A woman approached me after the service and said, "Sherry, how have you been?" and gave me a hug.
She didn't look familiar, and it was only after she spoke for a moment that I realized she was someone who I had trained with as a gold belt 10 years ago...so I made a quick recovery.
The reason I didn't recognize her was, sadly, she had aged dramatically. Plus, as it's sometimes said, the years were not "kind" to her.
Now, we all joke about getting older. "CRS" disease. Over the hill. Black balloons and grim reaper-themed birthday decorations for people turning 40.
Like it or not, getting older is inevitable. Time marches on and waits for no one.
But looking older, on the other hand, is something you DO have some control over!
Thats right.
There are many subtle yet effective ways that you can slow down or prevent the effects of aging (that dont involve expensive plastic surgery). Yes, time does march on, but it doesn't have to look like it marched across your face!
Here are seven ways to help take years off of YOUR appearance:
1) Get those precious antioxidants
Free radicals that are out of control in your system can cause a whole slew of health problemsand one of the biggies is they can accelerate aging!
So its crucial to make sure you take in sources of important antioxidants including Vitamins A, C and E, as well as minerals like selenium and zinc. Not only do these key nutrients help prevent free-radical damage to your skin cells, but they're also essential for wound repair and healing.
If you're noticing little lines and wrinkles already on your face, (or want to prevent them from showing up), skip the fancy, expensive moisturizers at the cosmetics counter and instead invest in some Vitamin C cream!
Studies suggest that Vitamin C applied externally to the skin may help stimulate the growth of new collagen.
And applying Vitamin C cream to your face can help plump up wrinkles, restore skin tone and fill in small lines, giving you a more youthful, radiant appearance.
Look for creams that contain a 10% concentration of Vitamin C. I use Avalon Organics, but there are many great ones out there.
3) Quit smoking
Nothing will destroy your skin and age you faster than smoking--NOTHING.
Experts say smoking accelerates the normal aging process of your skin, contributing to wrinkles. These skin changes can occur after only 10 years of smoking and are IRREVERSIBLE.
Smoking causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin. This impairs blood flow to the skin, robbing it of oxygen and important nutrients, such as vitamin A.
Smoking also damages collagen and elastin - the fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity. As a result, your skin begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely.
This is one of the changes I saw in my former karate classmate. I could smell smoke on her, so clearly she hadnt given up the habit. Her beautiful face was very wrinkled and she had jowls forming near her chin.
Quitting cold turkey isn't for everyone. There are loads of stop smoking aids and programs out there, so there are no excuses. Do it NOW.

4) Get enough Omega-3 essential fatty acids
You need adequate levels of Omega-3 essential fatty acids to maintain healthy cell membranes and reduce the production of inflammation-causing chemicals that can irritate skin tissues (and age you).
Unfortunately, our typical modern diets are grossly lacking in Omega-3 EFAs. This is largely due to our reliance on processed foods and vegetable oilswhich are loaded with inflammation-causing Omega-6 EFAs but contain few or no Omega-3s.
Plus the animals raised for our food supply are not fed the Omega-3 rich diet they once were, so were not getting those crucial EFAs from that source either.
While Omega-3 EFAs are still abundant in many fish, most people don't eat fish 7 days a week.
So as a result of all these factors, many of us are running low in Omega-3 EFAs.
And our faces are showing it!
5) Drink water
Your body needs water from head to toe, and that especially includes your skin.
Water provides natural moisture and carries needed nutrients to your skin, and it sweeps away waste products, both of which in turn help keep your skin smooth and clear.
There are a variety of factors that affect how much water the average person needs (including exercise level and the amount of natural water you get from your foods), but a good place to start is to drink at least 5-8 glasses a day.
6) Get enough sleep
Research has linked a lack of sleep to high blood pressure, diabetes, weight gain and...Looking OLDER.
Plus lack of sleep depletes the beneficial bacteria in your gut, weakening your immune system and making you susceptible to infections and viruses of all kinds.
The average person needs 7-9 hours a night. So if youre getting less than that on a regular basis, you just might be adding years to your face.
Turn off the TV, shut down your Facebook and get some decent rest.
7) Get enough fiber
We all know fiber is good for keeping things, er, "regular" down there. But it also helps your skin.
You see, fiber binds with toxins in your bowel and eliminates them from your body. If these toxins don't get eliminated and instead enter your bloodstream, they can penetrate skin cells and cause irritation, rashes, itching and more.
Getting all the fiber you need is easy...see the all-important step 8 below: 8) Have a healthy diet & keep your pH slightly alkaline
ALL of your organs, bones and tissues work ideally in an alkaline environment--in other words, when you have a slightly alkaline pH.
And that includes your biggest organ--your skin.
Plus like the rest of your body, your skin MUST get the nutrients and antioxidants it needs (like I mentioned above) to look and stay healthy and youthful.
If you exist on mainly processed food, fast food, soda or meal combinations that create an acid pH in your system, trust me, you can practically count on a lousy complexion, poor skin tone, skin problems and looking far older than your years.
Plus a poor diet typically lacks needed fiber and impairs nutrient absorption--which will further rob your skin of what it needs and will open the door for skin-harming toxins to be absorbed.
To have great, younger-looking skin (and health in all your other organs too!), you HAVE to eat the foods that give your body the nutrients and fiber it needs and keep acid wastes low.
Vegetables. Fruits. Lean meats and fish. Water. Nuts and healthy oils. Whole grains. All in combinations that are easier for your system to break down.
The GTNP manual explain the health price that you pay with a junk food/acid-creating diet--you will be shocked to see all the ways your diet choices affect your health (including your skin).
They also show you the exact foods to eat (and which ones to pair together) for better digestion and elimination of acid wastes.
The recipe book makes eating right tasty for your palate too. It's loaded with easy, delicious recipes that will soon become your favorites.
Slow down that march!
As I mentioned above, time marches on and it waits for no one.
But you can help S-L-O-W down that march and keep a more youthful appearance for many years to come!
And the next time you bump into someone you havent seen in a while, they just might say, Wowyou look so young! Whats your secret?
To your health,
Sherry Brescia
